Mahoning County in Ohio experienced earthquakes on March 10th, 2014 due to Hydraulic Fracturing activity. The Eastern Ohio county of Mahoning experienced a series of earthquakes on Monday, March 10th, 2014, in the area of its seven Hydraulic Fracturing drilling sites, owned by Hillcorp Energy. It appears that the earthquakes have been caused by Hydraulic Fracturing activity at the site. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has forced Hilltop Energy to suspend their drilling operations, pending an investigation.
Seismic activity has been occurring more frequently at Fracking Waste Injection sites, than at Hydraulic Fracturing sites. An injection well is a dedicated well used to dispose of toxic fracking fluids that have been used in hydraulic fracturing operations.
During Hydraulic Fracturing, after explosives are used to break apart subterranean rock, a stew of water, sand and highly toxic chemicals is pumped into the drilled well. It is then pressurized to further break up subterranean rock which allows natural gas to flow from the wells easier. After the fluid is used, much, but NOT all of it is pumped out of the wells. The contaminated water is then transported to another location in tanker trucks for disposal into a waste injection well. These Fracking waste sites are usually located in unsuspecting communities, sold out by their local “representatives”.
A single Hydraulic Fracturing well can use as much as 350,000 gallons of water poisoned with toxic chemicals such as benzene, xylene, ethylbenzene, naphthalene, formaldehyde, and many other cancer-causing chemicals. It takes very little of these chemicals to contaminate millions of gallons of water, making an entire watershed unfit for consumption.
As if this toxic stew deliberately pumped into in local water sheds wasn’t causing enough environmental damage, affecting the health of people and animals, and severely depreciating property values, the entire practice of Hydraulic fracturing itself is causing earthquakes severe enough to damage buildings, further driving down property values.
Scientists have been accumulating loads of evidence that Fracking injection wells have been the direct cause of earthquakes. Earthquakes near fracking injection sites throughout the Southern and central regions of the United States have increased by a factor of 20, likely because the large amounts of waste fluid acts as a lubricant within the Earth. Now it looks like the very act of hydro-fracking itself can cause severe seismic activity.
