Compared to chlorine, water disinfection with chloramine, or more precisely with monochloramines, has the advantage that the latter are less aggressive and much more stable (do not dissolve so quickly). In addition, chloramines are less likely to form halogenated disinfection byproducts (ABPs), known as carcinogens.
However, water chlorination may lead to higher levels of other ABPs and N-nitrosodymethylamine which are currently not regulated. Both have been shown to be genotoxic. Chloramines are compounds of chlorine and ammonia. Although different forms exist, monochloramine is the most stable.
How do you remove chloramines from water? We have listed several methods below, but only those that are really useful for water purification in the home:
- Carbon filtration – Activated carbon is ideal for filtering chlorinated water. But that’s not enough for chloramine. This is indeed the case, but a very long contact time is needed to obtain the desired result and thus larger filters and/or a lower flow rate. This is where the catalytic carbon filters come into play. Catalytic carbon is like the activated carbon of steroids – at least that’s what we call it. It not only removes chloramine and its by-products four times faster than activated carbon, but it is also very effective in reducing TTXM and volatile organic compounds. The only disadvantage is that catalytic carbon filters are about twice as expensive as conventional carbon filters.
- Reverse Osmosis – While the semi-permeable reverse osmosis membrane carries virtually no chloramine reduction, the various carbon pre-filtration steps that each reverse osmosis system has a will. A slow filter speed increases efficiency.
- Vitamin C – Ascorbic acid, also known as ascorbic acid, may be used to reduce the monochlorine content of chloride and ammonia. In fact, before the advent of catalytic carbon, vitamin C was used to dechlorinate water for dialysis and other medical applications. It also has a long history in the field of water purification. Vitamin C has recently become very popular for shower filters. To drink, simply add fresh fruit to the water and leave it for about 30 minutes to neutralize any chloramine. If you want to take a bath, the solution of 1000 mg vitamin C neutralizes all chloramine in the middle bath. Remember that because ascorbic acid is slightly acidic, the pH of your water will also drop.
- Ultraviolet light – Ultraviolet light is also good for destroying chloramines in water. It is also environmentally friendly and very cost effective to maintain.
- Campden Tablets – Not necessarily the best version of water for drinking or cooking, but home brewers swear by Campden tablets, another reducing agent that contains either sodium metabisulfite or potassium metabisulfite (also called metabisulfite).
Carbon breaks down chloramine. Chlorine then becomes harmless. But there’s always ammonia. It is therefore possible that the ammonia content increases when a carbon filter is used to remove chloramines from the water.

Chloramine can be removed from the water by simply leaving it standing. However, the problem is that it is a rather lengthy process. What for? Because monochloramine is relatively stable and does not spread quickly. The half-life in stagnant water can be over 100 hours. Tip: The half-life can be significantly reduced by aeration or mixing.
Does boiling water remove chloramines?

Brit for chloramine?
We now know that British filters are very popular because they’re cheap. Sorry to spoil the party, but standard and long glass Brita filters are not certified to remove chloramine. The same goes for Brita On Tap – although this doesn’t automatically mean they’re not at all effective against it. Finally, they all use activated carbon, and the two Brita lenses allow long contact times.
What about Aquasana?
It depends on the system you’re aiming at. For example, Aquasana’s OptimH2O reverse osmosis system is NSF certified to remove 97.66% chloramine. As with the Aquasana Rhino, there is also a version (EQ-400) for the Aquasana Rhino, which has been specially developed to combat the disinfectant. How do you remove chloramine from water containing vitamin C?
Vitamin C neutralizes chloramines in the same way as chlorine. The main advantage of this method is that vitamin C does not add any undesirable chemicals or salts to the water.
The disadvantage is that ascorbic acid decays in a few days, making it unusable.
How to remove chloramine from water for plants or fish
Chloramines must be removed from aquarium water and hydroponics. In fact, (A) it kills fish, they absorb it directly from the water through their gills into their bloodstream and (B) it can inhibit plant growth.
For aquarium water, it is customary to add sodium thiosulfate or another suitable supplement to the water. On average, tap water requires between 0.04 and 0.12 g of crystalline sodium thiosulphate per gallon. The products are available online and in your local pet shop/aquarium.
You can also use the carbon filtration described above. But you have to be more careful: Carbon will not reduce the ammonia content. In fact, this will lead to a higher ammonia content. It is therefore necessary to add a primer that converts the chemical into a safe and non-toxic form.
The same applies to a number of additives. If the product label states chlorine and chloramine but not ammonia, be careful. Maybe we need another agent.
