The low initial cost and fast set up are two important benefits of a countertop water filter system.
On this webpage we highlight two types of filters, gravity-fed Countertop Water Filters, and Water Distillers. both use actived-carbon media as a filter material, resulting in better tasting and healthier water, but the distiller units also steam separate water from contaminants, resulting in ultra pure water.
Although countertop gravity-fed water filters are fast to set up, they do have some caveats. Scroll to the bottom of this page to read more. Read our reviews below...

Review: This model comes with the two black carbon filters, and also comes with two (2) PF-2 Fluoride/Arsenic filters. The Big Berkey utilizes the latest technological advances to make water taste excellent and safe to drink.
The Big Berkey removes parasites like bacteria and cysts entirely and extracts harmful chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, organic solvents, radon 222 and trihalomethanes. It reduces nitrates, nitrites and heavy metals such as lead and mercury. The versatile Big Berkey is ideal for use at home, and is portable enough for camptrips or emergencies. It purifies treated water or untreated water from lakes, streams, or even ponds. It's a very nice looking system which is very easy to assemble and maintain.

This was an excellent review of several countertop filters, even better than the review from Berkey, so I replaced it with this one. Note: He reviews the Berkey 'Royal'. The only difference from the Big Berkey is that the Royal is a bit larger. Click to watch...

Review: This is a very popular and well-liked counter-top water distiller. Many owners are very impressed with its durability and long life. Comments about the purity of the water are all very positive. People use this for drinking water, for their aquariums, watering their hydroponic plants, and for topping off their lead-acid batteries. The cleaning solution takes a little time to dissolve the minerals that collect on it, but an overwheming majority love this disstiller.

Review: Perfect tasting water. Great looking, easy to use product
"I use this distiller almost daily and I'm still very happy with my purchase and very glad I got it. Water tastes perfect, whether I pre-filtered it or not. I have not noticed much difference in distilling time, whether I use hot or cold water. I do get a lot of mineral deposits left over. However, I can remove them easily with a sponge or with the solvent that was provided."
"What really impresses me about this distiller is what it leaves behind. I fill up the canister directly from the tap, which supposedly dispenses good drinking water on it's own! When the distilling is complete, what's left in the canister is truly disgusting. It is not only gross to look at, but it also smells. I'm very pleased with the distilled water this produces, except that I do taste a faint, possibly metallic taste in the distilled water."

Review: Some find this unit easy to put together, which is a good thing, as more than one reveiwer has mentioned the brochure isn't easy to read. Others have mentioned the complexity of the initial setup. Many have commented that the Zen water filter produces excellent tasting water, whereas a minor few are only marginally impressed.
-Inexpensive as compared to similiar models
-Much better than Brita/PUR or any other household water filter
-Water is noticeably cleaner than the tap water going in
-According to the manufacturers website, it has BPA-free plastic, even though Amazon's description doesn't mention it.
-Relatively compact as a countertop filter
-Very Slow to filter
-Mineral taste is overwhelming to some (some have omitted the included mineral stones)
-Difficult to clean

Although countertop water purifiers are quicker to set up and are generally less expensive than undercounter reverse osmosis systems, they do take up counter space and usually take much longer to produce a volume of filtered water. Excluding the distillers, most gravity-fed countertop units are not as effective at contaminant removal as reverse osmosis systems. They are, however very effective at removing chlorine and and other foul odors, which greatly improves the taste of the water.
The initial lower cost of some less capable units is usually offset by higher long-term costs. Replacement filters on these do not usually last very long, typically 40 gallons or less, so on a cost per gallon basis, they have have a higher long-term cost. Regardless, using these units are still much cheaper and more convenient than buying bottled water.
